Background

Dr. Sidney Shuler holds a Bachelor of Music in Education from Youngstown State University and a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His major teachers include Ronald Romm and Michael Ewald (University of Illinois) and Christoper Krummel of Youngstown State. Most recently, Dr. Shuler has served as principal trumpet of the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra (IL) and guest principal trumpet of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra (IL). Shuler has also performed with additional orchestras including the Moscow State Radio and Green Bay Symphony Orchestras. As an orchestral and commercial musician, Shuler has performed with Rachel Barton Pine, Mark O'Connor, Lynn Harrell, Mannheim Steamroller, Art Farmer, Byron Stripling, Roger Williams, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. In addition, he has also performed under the baton of esteemed conductors James Conlon, Michael Stern, and David Zinman. Adding to his performance credits, Sidney has been heard in solo and chamber performances across the United States as well as abroad in Russia and Spain. Further trumpet studies include sessions with Louis Ranger (New York Philharmonic), Raymond Mase (Orpheus Chamber Orchestra), and Charles Geyer (Chicago Symphony).

Connecting both his performance and education careers, Shuler has created www.trumpetexcerpts.com. This project was conceived as a means to connect students, worldwide, with materials to study and practice from the orchestral and wind repertoire. Active since the beginning of October, 2011, the site has regular visitors from all over the world.

Dr. Shuler is also an avid educator, having maintained a sizable private studio for the past decade. While working as a high school educator, his students and ensembles placed in and won many district, regional, and state events. His time working with the University of Illinois bands also placed Dr. Shuler at nationally televised events with the esteemed Marching Illini and Basketball Band. Dr. Shuler holds current and past membership in the International Trumpet Guild, Music Educator's National Conference (now NAMFE), and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Dr. Shuler resides in Chadron, NE with his wife, Pamela and two dogs Buster and Campbell.
