English Language Proficiency

Proof of English language proficiency must be submitted by applicants at the time of application. You must have evidence of English language proficiency sent directly to the Admissions Office. Proficiency may be demonstrated by any one of the following.

  • Test of English Language as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)*
    Arrangements to take the TOEFL can be found at: TOEFL.

    The minimum required score is:
    • 550 with no section score less than 56 (paper based)
    • 79/80 (Internet based)
    • 213 with no section score less than 22 (computer based)

            Students can direct ETS to send an original hard copy of their TOEFL score to                         Chadron State College online through the ETS Data Manger tool.

  • International English Language Test System (IELTS)*
    Minimum required score is 6.5. Arrangements to take the IELTS can be found at: IELTS.

    Students can direct IELTS to send an original hard copy of their IELTS score to Chadron State College online through the IELTS TRF Verification tool
  • ACT
    Minimum required scores are as follows: English 19, Reading 19.
    Arrangements to take the ACT exam can be found at: ACT.
  • SAT
    Minimum required scores for tests taken after March 2016 are as follows: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 440.
    Arrangements to take the SAT exam can be found at: SAT.

    Completion of certain IB English courses. Applicants who have completed any of the courses listed below (apart from the ab initio) with a minimum Grade 5 will not be required to take the TOEFL, IELTS or any other language proficiency assessments as part of the CSC admissions procedures:

Group 1 - Studies in Language and Literature
English courses available in this group are:
   - English A: Literature Higher level
   - English A: Literature Standard level
   - English A: Language and Literature Higher level
   - English A: Language and Literature Standard Level
   - Literature and Performance Standard level

Group 2 - Language Acquisition
English courses available in this group are:
   - English B: Higher level
   - English B: Standard level
   - English ab initio: Standard level

  • Completion of certain Cambridge English exams. Applicants who have completed either the CAE or CPE exams with a scale score listed below will not be required to take TOEFL, IELTS, or any other language proficiency assessments as part of the CSC admissions procedures:
    • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)
      • Scale score 200-210, Grade A, CEFR level C2
      • Scale score 193-199, Grade B, CEFR level C1
      • Scale score 180-192, Grade C, CEFR level C1
    • Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)
      • Scale score 220-230, Grade A, CEFR level C2
      • Scale score 213-219, Grade B, CEFR level C2
      • Scale score 200-212, Grade C, CEFR level C2
      • Scale score 180-199, Level C1, CEFR level C1

 

  • Completion of a minimum of six (6) credit hours of English compositions with a "C" or better from an accredited American higher education institution.
  • Successful completion of a CSC-recognized intensive English language training program within two years of application at a level CSC determines equivalent to the TOEFL or IELTS exams. Acceptable English language program providers at: CSC-Approved English Language Providers.

CSC reserves the right to require additional testing of any incoming student's English skills. If it is determined that additional English studies are necessary, you may be required to take the appropriate intensive English program courses prior to, or concurrent with, enrolling in CSC academic programs. Refusal to do so, or failure to successfully complete it, may result in dismissal from CSC.

*TOEFL, IELTS, ACT, and SAT scores are considered valid for two years from the date the test was taken.
**The Chadron State College school code for TOEFL, IELTS, and SAT is 6466.
***The Chadron State College school code for ACT is 2466 and for the SAT is 6466.
