2011 London Program

The train from Edinburgh to London is a long 4.5 hour ride. Had we been thinking we would have brought a lunch with us...oops. Needless to say we were starving by the time we go to our hotel. Nothing a good full peri peri chicken at Nandos couldn't cure.

London is my happy place. I love it here and I know it sounds weird but it feels like I am where I should be when I am here. If it were not for the crappy hotel (as Heather put it "3 stars my ass") it would feel like home away home. I know Heather won't agree, but I am a city person at heart. Probably a side effect of being raised in the least populated county of the least populated state.

Anyhow we tried unsuccessfully to find anyone from CSC at their hotel, but it was raining so we did not try too hard, but did have a drink in the lobby of the Royal National before leaving to go eat. I then took Heather on a quick tour to Piccadilly Circus, down through St. James's Park, over to Trafalgar Square and then down to Parliament and Big Ben.

We only made one real stop, that was at Trafalgar Square where they had a small exhibition for the UEFA Champions League Final. I picked up a shirt and we took some picks. Overall it was a busy evening.

This morning I took a walk through the Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus area. ( FYI - Leicester is a square but Piccadilly isn't a circus in the animal sense of the word. However, gIven all the tourists in the area, many of them teenagers, the name is appropriate. In reality, circus means circle - in this case the center of a number of intersecting streets).

In one of the corners of Leicester square there has been a large building with a glockenspiel on the outside. The large clock has 27 bells and portrays herdsmen and their animals in the meadows. This glockenspiel was presented to the City of Westminster by Switzerland in 1985 to celebrate its 400th anniversary. I've always enjoyed the clock and stop to watch it as many do as it puts on its show as it strikes the hour. The last time I was here, the building was being torn down and I wondered what would end up in its place and what would become of the clock. Today I found out.

The glockenspiel was rededicated in 2011 and now sits on a tower in the street so that all can continue to enjoy its charming time keeping. The building has been replaced by.........wait for it.............m&m World. After standing on the street shaking my head, I did what everyone else was doing - I entered the store. Reluctantly, I admit that the store is 'interesting' and 'captivating' in its portrayal of English culture through the eyes of m&ms. On one of the store's 4 floors there is even a replication of the Beatles in their famous crossing of Abbey Road.

I tried out the the 'what color m&m are you?' display. After being scanned, it was determined that I would be a purple m&m as I "have a thirst for knowledge that will never be quenched. The same goes for chocolate." Maybe there is something to this commercialization - however, I am proud to say I left the store without spending any money!

Last Day!

ADIOS! wow what a time...i must say quite the culture shock for a kid that has never lived in a town of more than 3000 people...off to Heathrow we go bound for the good ol USA...turns out the trip home would be a bit hairier than the journey over...8 1/2 hour flight to chicago cuz volcanoes on iceland are erupting, 3+ hour layover in chicago because of weather, and finally arriving in denver at 1 am...im so glad i only had to go to cheyenne cuz i heard the bus ride home was a bear sorry :( funny thing tho when i got up monday morning i was watching the news and found out the a tornado had hit missouri and when we were waiting in chicago they wanted to reroute us thru missouri think we dodged a bullet there....

Looking through my picture I found some picture and experiences I would like to share. I walked down Piccadilly Circus. Piccadilly Circus is amazing full of shops and old buildings.

While on Piccadilly circus I ate at a steak house and had lamb chops and mint sauce. To my surprise I like mint sauce. For an appetizer we had famous Bree, it's a baked cheese that you spread on bread with jam.

One day I got to go to the British Museum of Natural History. Below is a picture of an extinct sloth, Seth the Sloth from Ice Age popped into my mind.

The British Museum was my favorite for many reasons. My favorite floor was Ancient Egypt, I even got to see the Rosetta Stone.

Jack the ripper tour was amazing. Even though buildings are built over Old London it is still a haunting tour. One of Jack the Ripper victims is posted below.

British parks are different from Wyoming parks. They have way more foliage and are acres wide and long. Below are the picture of Hyde park.

The last night was a Medieval Banquets. My favorite part was the performances.

Now my blog is complete. I learned so much from this trip, and had amazing opportunities. CSC puts on a great trip for a cheap price. Coming from another college I did not know what to expect. The professors Dr. Nobiling and Dr. Wada mix education and laughter together well. CSC students were fun and outgoing. All in all I feel like the trip paid for it's self in the knowledge I gained.

Our trip back to the States was long and delayed some due to nasty weather in Chicago but we eventually arrived in Denver around 1am Monday morning. The bus ride back to Chadron was sleepless for me but i sure enjoyed seeing the sun rise and was glad I didn't have tall buildings blocking my view. London was a great place to visit and I learned a great deal during my time there; I still say this trip was a 'once in a lifetime' trip. I would recommend it to anyone.

The last few days in London were definitely very relaxed. On Friday we went to the town of Cambridge, which is on the river Cam and we had free time to wander around and do what we wanted. We ended up going "punting" which was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. Thanks for making us go Danielle!!! Our tour guide was awesome at his job and made the trip up the river very interesting. One of the colleges, Kings College was used in the first Harry Potter movie (yes I am a nerd and I do like Harry Potter, so that made my day).
On Saturday we had a free day so a few of us went to check out the British Museum, and after that we had a picnic in Hyde Park. It was a great day for a picnic, even though by that time I was very tired of the weird combinations they call sandwiches. That evening as a group we went to the "Medieval Banquet" which was a four course meal and they had entertainment and singing which was kinda cool. After that got over it was time to finish my packing so we could head out in the morning!!!!
We sat in the Heathrow airport for a good 4 to 5 hours because Omaha had the first flight out and they wouldn't fit on just one bus. But we entertained ourselves by playing cards, simple games like Go Fish, Old Maid, and Crazy Eights...It was fun and made the time pass quickly. Our Flight took about 8 1/2 hours because we had to detour south because of the volcano erupting in Iceland. When we landed in Chicago the very first thing I did was buy a "real" Dt. Pepsi because the pop over in London isn't even close to tasting like ours. We were originally supposed to leave Chicago at 8:00 pm then it got delayed to 10 pm, but didn't get off the runway until closer to midnight because of all the nasty weather that was going on. We finally made it to Denver about 2 am. and didn't get to Chadron until 7 am, I had been up for over 30 hours by this time, but I was soooo very excited to be home that I couldn't sleep. I took a little nap from about 9:30 to 2:30...went to bed at 8:30 that night and slept until 8 the next morning. I think that I am finally over my jet lag, and getting back into my old routine.

Oh yea...I forgot to mention that on Thursday I got to hold one of the Olympic Torches from the Vancouver games!!!

The return trip

Well, here's my final entry. Yesterday I really didn't feel like making an extra post since the trip home was exhausting, but I'll get to that later. Cambridge was cool, and while I was pretty much done sightseeing by the time Friday rolled around it was good to get out of the city. Cambridge is built all along the river Cam, so we decided to get a tour guide to "punt" us up and down the river while he gave a little history on the city. Saturday visited the British Museum before eating in Hyde park with some people. Most of Saturday I spent relaxing, mainly since by then I was getting pretty broke and I was more than a little exhausted from a combination of the busy city and from running around everywhere. That night though our entire group had dinner at a "medieval banquet" which was accompanied by entertainment and music from performers dressed in period costumes.

Sunday was pretty much dedicated to the return trip, which was not exactly a fun time. As soon as we got to Heathrow airport we heard there was a volcano erupting in Iceland which was causing delays and cancellations. Not sure how bad it was when we flew out, but it did cause our pilot to make a huge detour going around it which made the flight go from about 6 hours long to about 8 and a half hours long. When we landed in Chicago O'Hare, our plane to Dnever got delayed about 2 hours and because of poor weather conditions we were waiting on the tarmac for another hour. In the end we wound up in Chadron at about 7 in the morning when we were expecting to be there around 2:30 or 3 AM.

Regardless of unfortunate flight delays, the trip was a ton of fun and I'm glad I had the opportunity to do it. Thanks to my instructors, Dr. Nobiling and Dr. Wada for running the CSC side of the trip and keeping us relatively under control for two weeks! I hope this blog was at least a little interesting to the rest of you who were following it for whatever reason, and for those I won't see in a while I hope you have a good summer!
