Kappa Mu Epsilon

Kappa Mu EpsilonKAPPA MU EPSILON is a specialized honor society in Mathematics. KME was founded in 1931 to promote the interest of mathematics among undergraduate students. Its chapters are located in colleges and universities of recognized standing which offer a strong mathematics major. The chapters' members are selected from students of mathematics and other closely related fields who have maintained standards of scholarship, have professional merit, and have attained academic distinction. Both men and women are eligible for membership.

The society has grown steadily since its founding and today has one hundred eighteen chapters and approximately sixty-one thousand members in thirty-four states. We are host to the Nebraska Gamma Chapter of the honor society.

The primary PURPOSES of being a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon include the following :

  • To further the interests of mathematics in those schools which place their primary emphasis on undergraduate programs.
  • To help undergraduate students realize the important role that mathematics has played in the development of civilization;
  • To develop an appreciation of the power and beauty possessed by mathematics, due, mainly, to its demand for logical and rigorous modes of thought.
  • To provide a society for the recognition of outstanding achievement in the study of mathematics at the undergraduate level.
  • To disseminate the knowledge of mathematics and familiarize its members with the current progress in this important area of human interest.

Mathematics Online

The entire mathematics program (major, endorsement and minors) is available online as well as in the classroom.

The online math program at Chadron State College is convenient, a good buy, and a great learning opportunity. Because the courses are offered online, distant students can keep their current jobs and avoid moving expenses. They pay a flat tuition rate regardless of their residency status, and scholarships and Financial Aid opportunities are also available. The classes are small and the professors are dedicated to student success.

The mathematics classes are offered as hybrid classes. Hybrid classes are courses in which all students have access to the online materials. The on-campus students are expected to attend class in a traditional setting, where the professor in many instances will record the lecture, and all board work is done on a Smart Board. In many courses the Smart Board and audio files of class proceedings are typically uploaded after each class meeting for access by both on-campus students and distant students.

The mathematics programs available online include: Bachelor of Science in Mathematics; Teaching Endorsement mathematics courses; Minor in Mathematics; Minor in Applied Statistics; MAE, Mathematics; and MEd. in Curriculum and Instruction, Mathematics.

Pre-Professional Programs

Each professional school specifies the courses a student must complete before seeking admission into that school. Therefore, each student's program of study must be specifically designed to satisfy the admission requirements of the professional schools into which the student wishes to seek admission as well as their own educational needs.

Many students find that enrolling in the pre-engineering program for one or two years prior to transferring to an engineering college is beneficial. Formal agreements with regional engineering schools facilitates transfer. A faculty member with degrees in engineering advises pre-engineering students. Other mathematically-based areas of study, such as actuarial science, are also supported by the department.

Pre-professional students who plan to graduate from another institution may be exempt from the general studies requirements at Chadron State College. However, since students must complete the general studies requirements of the degree-granting institution, completion of these courses at the pre-professional level is recommended.
