Common Reading Experience

Common Reading Experience

The Common Reading Experience is a book that all first year students read, commonly used in first-year classes, creating a common dialogue across campus.

Common Reading Experience Purpose

The purpose of the Common Reading Experience is to provide a common experience to help first year students transition from high school to college, grow academically and socially, and participate in guided academic and social activities with other first year students, professors, and staff.

Common Reading Experience Goals

The Common Reading Experience program aims to advance the following goals:

  1. Build community across campus
  2. Provide a foundation for participants to begin setting academic expectations
  3. Nurture empathy for multiple perspectives
  4. Inspire thoughtfulness and critical thinking
  5. Offer an opportunity for participants to see themselves as global citizens who engage in dialogues about current issues. (Thorn, 2015; 136)
